To kick start our Design Methods and Insight Gathering module we received a talk from Dr Wendy Moncur about Online Identity and performance of self. This was a really interesting talk and posed some really thought-provoking questions. When does our social life start? When we are born? When we can speak? I don’t think there can be a right or wrong answer, but it really made me think about it. How we socialise changes as we grow up and develop. We play, we learn, we communicate online and offline and so our social life is morphing and changing more often than not, as we make it past important milestones in our lives. Online identity is a really interesting topic, as i think it is something very different to in-person identity. Each social media platform poses the opportunity to act in a certain way : instagram is a place to make your life seem perfect and show everyone what a good time you’re having; twitter is a place to seem funny, to make jokes about the ‘state of your life’; Facebook is a place to share funny videos. I think its really interesting how each platform calls for a different identity, a different version of you.
We then were introduced to the new module and what work it would entail over the next 11 weeks. We will be learning how there are different methods to gather insights that will help us become better designers and really cater for what our clients are asking for. I need to research how a first year university student’s relationship with photography has developed and changed over the short amount of time that they have been studying here. I think that it will be really intriguing to see how someone else relates to photography as it is something that has been a big part of my life for a while.
