So I finally got given a brief that relates to interior design. In ways of making, we got put into new groups and asked to design a new urban dwelling concept for a connected society. We can approach this brief several ways : from social connectivity to community connectivity to digital connectivity. Our group decided to design a home that would encourage the residents to spend more time together, rather than spending time using technology. There would be a communal area that everyone’s rooms connected to, but the bedrooms would be quite small, to encourage people to spend their time in the communal area. We were first inspired by tree houses, and how unique and playful they are. If the communal area was fun and an exciting place to spend time in, then the residents wouldn’t want to be spending so much time using technology or so much time in their bedrooms alone. I think this will tie in with a lot of my thoughts on the subject of social connectivity, which I have to write about for my Picture, Symbol, Icon module. I want to create a space that encourages conversation, that encourages you to put down your phone and actually interact with people in real life.
For the initial idea generation, we just used pinterest to find inspiration images of tree houses and communal living concepts that would help us come up with a more solid concept.
The final inspiration image, with the raised platforms became the main source of inspiration for our idea. We began sketching how the spaces connected and our idea began to take form.
