After having come up with an idea, I decided to make a small prototype of the product. I decided to make it out of cardboard, to make it lightweight and it is an easy material to work with. I cut three rectangles out and cut a window out of two of the layers. To make a ‘screen’, I cut acetate into the same size as the cardboard and sandwiched it between the two windowed layers.
I took the prototype out on location to get photographs as if someone was actually using it.
I think the simplicity of the form works really well with the product, which is just meant to be simple and easy to carry about with you. I kind of wish I hadn’t handwritten the information as it makes it look less realistic but I think it gets the main idea of the concept across. To round off the project, I made a really simple concept board that explains the idea quickly to potential users, combining text and image to convey the idea behind the project.
I think that my concept delivers well against the design brief, which asked us to design a new experience for a user to navigate a place. I really like my concept, as I’ve always enjoyed just going for a walk and discovering new places. I think that maybe my prototype could have been a bit more resolved, but it gets the concept across successfully, which is what it’s meant to do.
