Long time, no see huh? Reading week is now over and done with and I’m getting back into the swing of the routine. We started the second set of briefs for all our modules and I have been working away at them all. For ways of seeing, this time we were asked to work in our reading groups to come up with a 3D landmark to represent Dundee and encourage social engagement through drawing onto the cardboard structure. During the week away from classes, my group met to discuss ideas and begin constructing the landmark. We all came with ideas already, before deciding that one idea, based around the observation that design is something at the heart of the city, was the most interesting. Inspired by the sign outside the DJCAD Matthew Building, with its simple typography, we decided to construct the word “Design” to be our landmark. Our idea was simple : these letters would be large scale in theory and would encourage locals to decorate it with spray paint. It would get painted freshly regularly so the design of the landmark would be constantly changing, echoing the flurry of change that is overcoming the city at the moment. Having been asked to make the landmark out of cardboard and take it out into the public, we had to compromise our design to make a scale model as making it full size would have made this very difficult.
We set to work making a template of each letter before layering the cardboard to make the letters three dimensional. Some letters proved to be much simpler than other to make… Once this was done, we filed some of the more ragged edges to make them more uniform and sleek. I think the simple font that we used really works as it would give the public a pretty blank canvas to engage with if this was to become a real monument in the city. After running out of time once the letters were made to make any more progress, we decided to call it a day and resume our work when we would have enough time to take it out to the public.
