So another of the briefs for my picture symbol icon module was to go out into the city and take photographs depicting a particular identity. Being asked to go beyond the obvious and see the urban details that are often overlooked, I went on a walk in the area of the city behind the university and near the old college building. I was surprised by how many abandoned buildings there were, just by wandering down normal streets. At home in Glasgow, this isn’t really something you see that often. Sure, you get the more run down buildings but I wasn’t expecting to find something so big as the old Dundee College Building.
I love taking photos of places and buildings that people would often look at and think they were ugly and negative parts of a city. I see the past in these places, I find them way more interesting than perfectly pristine areas of the city.
I love finding little alleyways like this, they’re always unnoticed in cities, with people walking past them without a second glance.
I focussed more on the architectural details I noticed along my walk, as this is what caught my eye the most. Going along quiet streets meant that I was deliberately going “behind the scenes” of the city, which is one of the tags I had selected to go alongside the photographs I took.
The tags I selected to accompany these photos were :
