Investigating the relationship between word and image in the creation of identity, as a group we had to come up with as many objects that related to a certain word, in order to create a playful interpretation of word and image on a poster.
After exploring word associations, we moved onto phrases, coming up with different ways to display its meaning through the depiction of everyday objects. Taking the Shakespearian phrase, “Measure for Measure”, our group came up with a simple but effective sketch for a minimalist poster.
Taking such simple words and phrases and thinking of clever ways to associate word and image was really interesting, something I’ve never had to do before. It made you think beyond the actual meaning of the word and think about the more subtle associations you make in your mind when you hear a certain word or phrase.
The simplicity of this poster is really effective at putting the point across. In the brainstorming process, my group was really struggling to keep our ideas simple, minimal even. We kept wanting to come up with more obvious and elaborate designs, but eventually we came up with this simple poster design.
